We organise Technical Forums on future spectrum needs approximately once a year, each focusing on a specific theme. The approach is based on interviews conducted by the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS) with companies and organisations that can contribute to the selected topic.
What is the new theme for 2027?
The new theme for 2027 will focus on airborne drones and anti-drone systems (UAV, UAS, C-UAS).
What does PTS want to learn?
Through dialogue with the market regarding spectrum requirements, regulatory needs, and service development, we aim to identify spectrum demand and future services within the drone sector.
We would like to identify whether there are any unmet spectrum requirements within the drone industry that may require PTS to make changes to the Swedish National Frequency Allocation Plan.
Are you interested in contributing as a stakeholder in spring 2027?
Are you, for example, a drone operator, manufacturer, or service provider? Register your interest as a participant in December 2026 and take part in digital bilateral meetings with PTS during the first half of 2027. Further information will be published on the PTS website in December 2026.
What does participation in a Technical Forum theme involve?
- Submit an expression of interest, after which PTS will provide further information.
- We invite your organisation to a preparatory meeting. This meeting will provide further information on the purpose for and methodology used in the second meeting, as well as identify appropriate representatives from your organisation.
- We will then invite relevant participants from your organisation to participate in a bilateral dialogue meeting where your future spectrum requirements will be discussed.
Why is PTS working with the Technical Forum and the theme on airborne drones and anti-drone systems (UAV, UAS, C-UAS)?
This is a forward-looking initiative aimed at improving the Authority’s understanding of the UAV, UAS, C-UAS markets. The objective is to support long-term spectrum planning and management, thereby maximising societal benefit and promoting efficient use of radio spectrum.
On the Need for Wireless Communication
The ongoing digitalisation of society is increasing the use of technological solutions, such as connected devices (Internet of Things, IoT), autonomous vehicles, and other equipment that relies on wireless communication. Radio spectrum will continue to be used in more and more areas to connect people, systems, sensors, vehicles, and other things. When new needs arise, PTS requires information from market stakeholders about future spectrum needs to effectively plan spectrum management in the long term.
Previous Themes in the Technical Forum
During the autumn of 2024, we focused on gaining a better understanding of the needs for radio spectrum for satellite communication services for FSS-use (Fixed Satellite Service). Several bilateral dialogue meetings were organized with both national and international market players.
During 2025, the forum focused on gaining a clearer understanding of the industry's needs for radio spectrum concerning satellite services Direct-to-Device (D2D) and future service offerings in Sweden.
