IP telephony, or telephone subscription via broadband connection, is now more common than fixed line telephony over the copper network (PSTN). Compared with 2014, the number of IP subscriptions increased by 7%, while traditional telephony continues to decrease.
"IP based technologies are now the most common type for both telephony and broadband services, and the use of these services continues to increase. It is a positive development, in which strong demand and continued investment go hand in hand," says Catarina Wretman, acting Director General of PTS.
Swedes use mobile data more and more
The amount of data that the Swedes use abroad has grown exponentially. Between 2014 and 2015 traffic increased by 75%. In the Swedish mobile network, too, there is a clear increase in the use of data: in 2015 there was a transfer of 471,000 terabytes of data, or an increase of 29% since the previous year.
The number of mobile call minutes increased by 11%, which is a higher growth rate than the previous year. From a steady decrease over the past few years, text messaging has levelled out. This is due to the increased number of fixed price subscriptions with free calls and texts.
Of the 14.8 million mobile subscriptions at the end of 2015, 6.2 million have used 4G services, which is an increase of 53%.
Fibre on the increase
In 2015 the number of fibre subscriptions increased by 19% which is a a relatively sharp increase. The increase was 17% between 2013 and 2014. Fibre became the most common form of access technology in 2014. This position has been consolidated with the continued strong increase in 2015.
Mobile revenues increase
Total revenues on the retail market for electronic communications amounted to SEK 52 billion. The figure remains unchanged from 2014.
Revenues from mobile calls and data services increased by 2%. Income from fixed broadband subscriptions increased by 10% to SEK 10.4 billion, while revenues from fixed telephony continued to decrease by 16%.
